Grendel came from the marshes to feed on Hrothgar's men. This time it was guarded and they were much more prepared as they expect his attack. The place is mostly deserted besides Beowulf who guarded the area.

Grendel breaks the door to the halls of Herot. He sees a crowd of warriors sleeping together. Excited, Grendel knows he'll eat good tonight.
"And his heart laughed, he relished the sight, Intended to tear the life from those bodies" (28)

Grendel easily kills a sleeping, unconscious Geat and moves on to his next target. He grabs Beowulf and is about to consume him. Little does he know, Beowulf is not fast asleep and instead prepared to kill such a beast.
"Grasped at a strong-hearted wakeful sleeper— And was instantly seized himself, claws Bent back as Beowulf leaned up on one arm." (29)

The moment Grendel feels Beowulf's grasp, he has never felt a mortal's grasp this hard. With time, Grendel's strength fades away and Grendel intends to retreat due to Beowulf's brute strength. He's even referred to as the Almighty Protector. Grendel's arm eventually gets ripped off and the battle comes to a close. Grendel is able to escape from Beowulf's wrath but the battle left him devastated and on the verge of death.
"And the bleeding sinews deep in his shoulder Snapped, muscle and bone split And broke." (30)

Though Grendel has fallen, his mother intends to seek vengeance and retribution for her son's death. Not being able to find Grendel, she kills Hrothgar's closest friend and retrieves her son's arm and falls back into her putrid underwater lair.
"That night, though, Grendel’s mother kills Hrothgar’s closest friend and carries off her child’s claw. The next day, the horrified king tells Beowulf about the two monsters and their
underwater lair." (31)

Beowulf enters Grendel's Mother's lair with a sword to fight against her. The sword proved to be futile in the battle and Beowulf struggles to defeat her. However, upon Beowulf's near-death, he seizes a sword from the wall made by giants. He impales Grendel's mother and defeats her.
"Her body fell To the floor, lifeless, the sword was wet With her blood, and Beowulf rejoiced at the sight." (32)

Beowulf promises to kill Grendel along with his mother. He vouches he'll do everything he can to kill the monster. He is willing to put his life on the line to protect the Kingdom and the future of the Danes.
"Beowulf resolves to kill Grendel’s monstrous mother. He travels to the lake in which she lives." (33)

Beowulf beheads Grendel and ends him for good. After decapitating his head, Beowulf takes it ashore and returns to the Kingdom of the Danes as proof.
"Found him lying dead in his corner, Armless, exactly as that fierce fighter Had sent him out from Herot, then struck off His head with a single swift blow." (33)

After defeating Grendel and Grendel's mother, Beowulf returns home and is crowned the King of the Geats after the death of his Uncle. He has since aged and his previous strong-will gradually fades away.
"“I’ve never known fear, as a youth I fought In endless battles. I am old, now, But I will fight again, seek fame still, If the dragon hiding in his tower dares To face me.” (34)

Beowulf, with his companion, Wiglaf approaches the dragon's den. The dragon immediately roars and breathes its fiery breathe upon its disturbance. The battle proves to be quite difficult but in the end, Beowulf manages to kill the dragon by landing a fatal blow and sustaining fatal injury himself. Beowulf dies and crowns Wiglaf as new king of the Geats and orders him to be buried in a barrow and distribute the treasures from the dragon's den to everyone.
"Then Beowulf rose, still brave, still strong, And with his shield at his side, and a mail shirt on his breast," (35)
