Isabel

Isabel finds a hungry cat and gives it food and shelter, she also plays a trumpet. A protest broke out right after she finished playing the trumpet, many people rushed into the streets, chanting angry political messages. She thinks her dad is involved in the protests, so she looks for him. She finds him in the front lines, with a policeman beating him with a nightstick. She jumps between her dad and the policeman. Her family decides that they need to leave Cuba for their family's safety.

They are watching baseball when Lito brought up the riot in Malecón, and they talk about how the police are probably coming for Isabel's father, but he already tried to escape 3 times before. The family agues about if they should leave/flee their home. Isabel and her family decided they want to flee to Florida, but they dint have enough gasoline to power the boat. Isabel grabs her trumpet and use t to bargain for enough gasoline to leave the island. She also gives the fisherman her cat.

Isabel and her family carried a boat to the nearby beach. They filled the boat with gas cans, bottles of fresh water, condensed milk, medicine, cheese and bread. When they arrived the the shore, she mrt s television interview and a woman from CNN came and wanted to interview them. They saw many other boats in the water, and they also saw the police. Two of the police had left the group and was running towards them. The police started to shoot the boat, because the Ivan and his girlfriend(the police that had left the group) were deserters, and deserters would be shot.

They'd had stuffed the bullet hole in the boat, and the lights of Havana had faded into the background. They started to talk and introduce themselves to each other. Lito and the others find out that Isabel had traded her beloved trumpet. The motor died.

The boat engine overheated so then they tried to pour seawater over it to cool it down, and Ivan and Isabel were in charge of scooping seawater out of the boat. Everyone was arguing about if they should turn back or not, but before they could make a desision a giant tanker came towards their boat.

Ivan's father falls overboard. Isabel got reminded of the time her grandmother drowned, and she didn't want to watch another person disappear under the waves(drown). She dives into the water to try to save him. Ivan dives in to the water to try to save Isabel. Ivan and Isabel both pulled Ivan's father back overboard. They loose their medicine because it fell overboard. They predict that there is going to be a storm soon.

Isabel's mother gets really sick, and gets worried about her unborn child. They see a beach with people on it, thinking that it's Florida. They arrive on the beach at the Bahamas. If anyone of the people step a foot of the boat, they would get deported back to Cuba. They leave the boat, but a women from the beach gives them some chips, water and aspirin for the trip.

The boat starts to break, so they try to take some weight away by having some people in the water floating alongside the boat. They start talking and finally kind of being happy then a shark bites Ivan's leg. Ivan dies from blood loss. With great ceremony they dispose of Ivan's body into the ocean.

Right after they dispose of Ivan, they see the shore of a Miami beach, but the boat starts the sink. They also see a coast guard boat coming towards them. Isabel's mother is about to give birth. In a moment of despration, Lito remembers of how he helped turn away the Jews, which most likely resulted in their death, and he jumped overboard to distract the coast guard ship so that everyone else can get to Miami. Isabel's mother gives birth, and they settle in. Isabel eventually gets another trumpet.
