In the 1930's the Japanese government enforced cultural nationalism, leading to a strict censorship and control of published media. Many animators were urged to produce animations which enforced the Japanese spirit and national affiliation
The history of anime began around the end of the second World War, When Japanese were hired to make animations for the military.
In 1943 Geijutsu Eigasha produced Mitsuyo Seo's Momotaro's Sea Eagles animation with help from the Navy. In 1945 the first real feature length animated film was created called Momotaro's Divine Sea Warriors.

First colour anime feature film The tale of the White Serpent. It was more Disney in tone with musical numbers and animal sidekicks. It is considered to be the first anime ever, in the modern sense.
On May 1, 1961 the first anime series Otogi Manga Calendar broadcasted. On January 1, 1963 Astro Boy premiered on New Year's Day and is the first popular animated Japanese television series that embodied the aesthetic that later became familiar worldwide as anime. First magical girl anime series Sally the Witch broadcasted on December 5th 1966

Japanese film market shrinks due to competition from television. Many young animators are appointed to be directors, bringing in young talent and allowing for more experimentation. The genre of Mecha begins. Mecha is a futuristic genre that consists of robots or machines controlled by people.

Anime became accepted into the Japanese culture and experienced a boom in production, with this decade being considered the "golden age of anime." This decade would bring about several famous productions that would have an enormous impact on future animations by introducing many favourite genres like martial arts and other sports genres. Dragon Ball Z airs in Japan and begins the martial arts superhero genre. It would later become translated into many languages worldwide and become a huge success.
The Ghost in the shell is released and it is known to have a strong influence on the American-Australian film "The Matrix."
Pokemon TV series after being adapted from its video game series. It would be one of the longest running anime in history and dubbed into different languages.
2000 - 2020

Many shows were adapted from manga and light novels including popular titles such as Naruto, Bleach, FullMetal Alchemist and etc. These shows would be extremely successful and achieve large fan bases that range worldwide.
Western streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime are increasingly becoming involved in the production and licensing of anime.
Demon Slayer: Infinity Train became the highest-grossing Japanese film and one of the world's highest-grossing films of 2020.
