The Everly Brothers both enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. This slowed down their career, but they still released singles like "That's Old Fashioned". This song would be their last top ten song of their careers.

Don Everly collapses while at a show due to his drug addictions, but the media was told he had food poisoning. Both Everly brothers were amphetamine addicts, which was not uncommon in rock and roll artists.

The Everly Brothers released their album Roots, which critics called "one of the finest early country-rock albums." One of the songs, "Mama Tried" would become very popular by country artist Merle Haggard.

The Everly Brothers decide to go their own ways after releasing some solo recordings in years before (which were mainly unsuccessful). Don claimed he was tired of being an Everly Brother and during the last show, Phil smashed his guitar on stage and Don had to finish the gig by himself.
