The ancient Filipinos first dwelt in caves and has learned the art of architecture as they move from one place to another to hunt for food. Aside from caves, they also have Torogan and Ifugao houses as their dwelling place or shelter.
The ancient Filipinos have attained a high artistic level through pottery, jewelry and wood and cave carvings.
During this period, rituals are considered as the earliest form of theater, music, dance and literature. One example of this ritual is the marriage ritual done by the tribes.

Islamic Colonial Period have showcased the different cultures and background of the Islamic Religion.
They are known for the structures of their Mosques that are used for praising Allah. They are usually made of light materials that do not last long.
Filipino Islamic art reflects the ethnic background and Islamic identity of the people.
One of the major features of Islamic painting and sculpture is the Okkir that is shown in the picture below. Other paintings of this period is the Malong, while Sarimanok is a well-known sculpture of the religion.
1521 - 1898

Architectural designs during this period showed influences of baroque style. It is evident in the churches built during the Spanish period. It has massive walls and thick buttresses to adapt to our geological conditions. Some churches are Paoay Church in Ilocos Norte and Barasoain Church in Bulacan.
From the traditional carving of anitos, the sculptures were replaced with saints. These are used to display in our homes in replace of the anitos and on churches' altars.
The Spanish colonizers introduced Western paintings that are religious and devotional. Examples of these are the portrait of saints, the Holy Family, the Passion of Christ and a lot more.
1898 - 1946

The genres of painting showcased during American Colonization are landscape, portrait, genre, interior and still life. Portraits are reserved for higher ranking officials with an academic approach to make it formal.
Famous sculptural works during this period is the Bonifacio Monument and the UP Oblation which are made by the National Artist Guillermo Tolentino.
Some famous architectural designs during this period can be seen in the Metropolitan Theater that was inspired with Art Deco. Some buildings especially government building has the touch of Neoclassicism.
1946 - 1969

The architectural projects involved in this period are more on public works.
The Japanese Occupation in our country has a different kind of genre influenced in the Philippine Art. Most of the paintings done depicts war events. Aggression, nationalism, symbolic protest and aspiration for peace are most likely the topics depicted in the artworks.
1970 - Present

During this period, architectural form of art is seen on tall buildings like a condominium, malls, commercial and business buildings and subdivisions.
In terms of paintings, it dealt with figurative and non-figurative form of art. Abstract expressionism is also evident in this period. The rise of Multimedia and Mixed Media also occurred during this period.
